Course Description

Advancing Re(al)conciliation is designed to educate through truth-telling and inspire action. Learners will learn about how the past created much of our present experiences and situations, and how present knowledge and relationships can shape the future. Learners will explore current realities within the context of understanding the past as they 'peel away' the layers of colonial teaching, knowledges, understandings, positionalities, and experiences.

Advancing Re(al)conciliation means progressing beyond where learners are at - personally, socially, politically, environmentally, economically, and professionally. This course aims to support all persons in their journey to finding Truth and Reconciliation by moving forward with good intentions.

Learner "I CAN" statements, after taking this course:

  • Identify colonial systems of oppression.
  • Identify how identity was shaped by colonialism.
  • Identify why we are limited in our understanding of Indigeneity and settler colonialism.
  • Create and enact new understandings and relationships with Indigenous peoples.
  • Recognize the value of local Indigenous perspectives and approaches to healthy education and economic relationships, and activities.

Advancing Re(al)conciliation invites all Canadians and international learners to participate in the reconciliation journey. The course offers individual learners and organizations the opportunity to commit to the TRCs Calls to Action #62 and #92.
