ICH001 - Whole Person Wellness
Course Description
In this course, you will explore “whole person wellness” from an Indigenous worldview and perspective. The phrase “whole person wellness” is preferred to “mental health and well-being” because Indigenous Peoples have inherently understood and respected the interconnectedness within a person and beyond.
Indigenous Peoples have endured decades of colonial trauma and continue to be impacted by colonialism today. This course will briefly explore the impacts of colonialism on whole person wellness including Indian Residential Schools, Day Schools, the '60s Scoop, and the Indian Act.
Today, intergenerational trauma impacts whole person wellness, and this is a reality for many Indigenous Peoples. We will explore some personal, family, and community impacts that are being experienced today but also explore how some disruptive cycles are also being overcome with whole person wellness practices.
This course is beneficial to learners who are interested in understanding Indigenous worldviews and perspectives as they shape whole person wellness. The course is designed to help adult learners gain an understanding of historical and intergenerational trauma events that impacted whole person wellness today.
As you work through the course, you will begin to recognize the impacts that colonial events have had and continue to have, on Indigenous People. Ideally, you, as a learner will take from the course what you need to take steps toward reconciliation in your personal and professional life.
