Course Description

This course looks at the emotions that happen during pregnancy and the postnatal period, understanding the feelings most parents navigate. This course is for all learners who are interested in supporting the birthing process and understanding Indigenous birthing worldviews and perspectives. It recognizes Indigenous parents' cultural strengths, challenges, and the role of traditional knowledge in fostering resilience and well-being. The course also explains perinatal mood and anxiety disorders (PMADs) and culturally responsive strategies for emotional wellness.

This course supports the TRC Calls to Action in the health sector. This course exists today because of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action supporting Indigenous health.

 

Learning Objectives

Learners will gain the knowledge, understanding, skills, abilities, attitude, and awareness to:

  1. Recognize the emotional, physical, and social adjustments during the perinatal period.
  2. Differentiate between typical postpartum adjustments, baby blues, and PMADs.
  3. Explain the impacts of emotions on parents, babies, and families.
  4. Apply practical strategies to manage emotions and promote well-being.
  5. Honour the role of Indigenous cultures in perinatal mental health.

Skills and Competencies

  • Analytical thinking about supporting the emotions of expecting parents.
  • Culturally responsive birth support techniques for perinatal emotions. 
  • Cultural awareness and re-awakening in perinatal situations.
  • Knowledge application of support around perinatal emotions. 

Summary

  • Number of hours: 1.5 hours total 

  • Assessment: Learners must achieve 70% on the Knowledge Check to pass the course. The Knowledge Check allows multiple attempts. An incomplete course will count as a fail.

  • Previous education required: None; this course does not have a required prerequisite.

  • Delivery: Online, self-paced

  • Completion timeline: Within 180 days from when you enroll in the course.

  • Applies toward the following certificates: Perinatal MicroCredential or MicroCertificate in Advanced Perinatal Support
