Course Description
This course offers a comprehensive understanding of lactation through both biological and cultural lenses. Learners will explore the physiology of milk production, positioning and latch, common feeding challenges, and storage practices alongside Indigenous teachings, community care, and trauma-informed support. Videos, reflection prompts, and culturally grounded resources help bridge clinical knowledge with lived experience and community-based practice.

This course supports the TRC Calls to Action in the health sector. This course exists today because of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Calls to Action supporting Indigenous health.
Learning Outcomes
Learners will gain the knowledge, understanding, skills, abilities, attitude, and awareness to:
- Explain the stages of human milk production and the biological mechanisms of lactation.
- Recognize the health, emotional, and practical benefits of breastfeeding for both the parent and the infant.
- Integrate Indigenous knowledge systems and community roles in the care and support of lactating families.
- Practice common breastfeeding positions and techniques to promote comfort and effective milk transfer.
- Identify common breastfeeding challenges using trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices.
- Support a variety of feeding journeys, including chest feeding, pumping, and formula use, with affirmation and flexibility.

- Culturally responsive birth support techniques for lactation support.
- Analytical thinking about lactation support.
- Cultural awareness and re-awakening in lactation situations.

Assessment: To pass the course, learners must achieve a score of 80% or higher on the Knowledge Check, which allows multiple attempts. An incomplete course will count as a fail.
