Course Description
Governance
Project success is highly dependent on leadership and executive ownership and involvement. This course discusses project governance as the framework to project oversight and the link between the project manager and the executive level. We will discuss the essential principles of governance for projects as described in the standard ISO 21505 Project, programme, and portfolio management - Guidance on Governance.
This course is for you if you are a project manager, project funder, project sponsor, senior management member, or a member of a team starting a major project.
Sponsorship
Despite the importance of governance and sponsorship and the senior level where they take place, they are often overlooked, and many projects fail due to a lack of sufficient support from the organization and senior management. The lack of meaningful support is driven by a lack of recognition of the importance of this support and the lack of time and capacity by senior management to do what they may view as "babysitting projects", especially after putting the project in the good hands of a qualified project manager.
This half-day power session reviews senior management's role in supporting project success. It explores applying impactful project sponsorship techniques to support projects for success.

Number of hours: 3.5 hours/day x 2 days = 7 hours

Assessment: Attendance and participation are mandatory for all four sessions and are monitored by the facilitator. Lack of attendance and/or participation may affect the learner's successful completion of the course. Successful completion of the course involves achieving 80% on the Final Quiz.

Previous education required: The prerequisite for this course is Project Management Essentials. The remaining badges of the Project Management MicroCertificate can be taken in any order.

Darya Duma, PEng, PMP is a Senior Consultant with Procept. Practice areas include PM governance, design and development of PM frameworks, project scheduling, and risk management, and course design and delivery. Darya has been active with the PMI REP Advisory Board and is the Vice-chair of the Canadian Mirror Committee on ISO/TC258 Project, programme, and portfolio management. Darya is a practicing Project Manager with over 15 years of experience in developing national and international standards for CSA and ISO, managing elevator installations for a mechanical contractor, and various client assignments with Procept. She also actively contributed to the development of the ISO standard 21505 on the governance of projects, programmes, and portfolios.
Ori Schibi has 27 years of experience providing practical new ways of managing projects and programs and effectively dealing with challenges around organizational change, strategy, business analysis, and PMOs. His experience includes driving process efficiencies, software implementations, project recoveries, project management skills assessments, and complex programs that stabilize the business, create growth and value, and lead sustainable change. He has long and solid agile experience – including assessing an organization’s readiness for agile projects, helping organizations select the right lifecycle approach, aligning agile projects with corporate governance structures, coaching team members, leading agile transitions and adaptations, and driving value through leading agile projects. As an instructor, Ori brings his wealth of experience to class and his delivery style includes real-life, practical examples – that are easy to relate to and understand; an appropriate sense of humour, and a unique ability to connect with his class participants to maximize the value of their learning. He is also accredited by PMI to teach its PMP Exam Prep course.
